Worker safety keeps us all protected

Your risk management team at PEP wants to keep you informed of the issues facing the workplace and worker safety today. It was recently researched that Americans believe, wrongly, that they are at a greater risk from violent crime or natural disaster than from an accidental injury. This is according to a National Safety Council study in 2006 called the American Worker Safety Study. This study polled 400 workers, asking them to rate four areas of safety, and if they believed they were at risk for injury from any of them. Accidental injury ranked third, above terrorism, but below natural disaster. It seems Americans are misguided in their beliefs, as the data doesn’t support the survey. The data shows that accidental injury is the leading cost of death for people under 40. In 2004 over 16,100 Americans were murdered, 230 died from natural disasters and an amazing 110,000 died from accidental injuries. On top of that, over 23 million were injured severely enough to result in total disability.
