Recruiting New Employees
Employees are the lifeblood of a business. Every employer wishes they could have the very best people for the job.
As you hire the perfect employees for your business, PEP’s employee leasing program is here to assist you with payroll and human resources. Give us a call at 1-800-650-3002.
Finding the very best employees, however, often reminds you of the old “needle in a haystack” saying. On one hand, you want to hire a staff full of geniuses who will work their hearts out for you. On the other hand, you don’t have the time to sift through a mountain of résumés and test a bunch of employees who may not work out after a couple of weeks.
Thankfully, there are many qualified, competent, dependable people out there. Other than placing the same old ad in the paper, what else can you do to find them?
- Get recommendations from your friends, business acquaintances, family members, and former coworkers.
- Ask your employees for referrals. Offer a referral incentive to employees, such as a bonus or vacation days, for every successful hire they refer.
- Go through your old prospects and see if any of them are still available.
- Tell your vendors and suppliers that you’re hiring. They usually have good contacts.
- When people are promoted within your organization, ask them to describe exactly what it takes to do their former jobs, including skills, personality traits, and experience.
- Remember that anyone you meet could be your next employee, whether it’s a salesperson on the phone or someone in line at the supermarket.
- Local companies going through layoffs or downsizing could be a resource for new employees.
- Start an internship program with local high schools and colleges. Most schools have placement services, too.
- Advertise in professional journals, magazines, and web sites.
- Inquire at trade associations, or join a professional association yourself. Then tap your peers for advice and recommendations.
- When you do advertise via the standard methods—in the newspaper or online—keep your ad upbeat and positive. Also, be very specific about what you’re searching for. Web sites give you a lot more room to describe the position. For print ads, paying for extra space is worth it when it comes to the quality of candidates you will receive.
- During the interview process, call all references and bring potential employees back for a second interview if necessary.
